Precautions for the Production of Stainless Steel Flanges

First, keep the stainless steel flanges away from the substances which will easily corrode the stainless steel. Keeping the surface of the stainless steel flange clean is the most important thing for the stainless steel flange. Once the surface of the stainless steel flange is corroded, the appearance of the stainless steel flange will be changed and will not be smooth any more. No matter is is the acidic or alkaline gas or liquid, it should be kept away from the production environment of the stainless steel flange.

Second, choose the suitable gasket for the stainless steel flange. Although flanges play important role in connecting pipes, they can not work well without the help of the gaskets. The asbestos gasket is the good helper of flanges. Asbestos has a very good property, and it it can resist acidic substances. Whether it is the gas or liquid, it can be well absorbed by asbestos so that the gas or liquid will not have any effects on the stainless steel. Of course, in some special occasions, gaskets made of other materials will also be used for the stainless steel flanges, for example, using the gaskets complementary to the stainless steel flanges.

Third, the connection between the pipe and the flange must be considered. Different connection methods should be adopted when the pipe and the flange are connected. For the thin pipes, the threaded flanges can be screwed to connect the pipes, but for the high pressure pipes, the stainless steel flanges must be welded to connect the pipes because the welded connection will be more solid and reliable. It had better use the welded connection for the flanges made of stainless steel, not matter the pipes the flanges are connected with are the high pressure pipes or the thin pipes.

The diameter and the thickness of the flange is related to whether the pipe the flange is connected with has the high or low pressure. Under normal circumstances, the higher the pressure of the pipe is, the thicker the wall of the stainless steel flange will be. If the pressure of the pipe is relatively low, a thin stainless steel flange can be used to connect different pipes.

After the corrosion of the stainless steel flanges, the walls of the stainless steel flanges usually become thinner and there are some pits on some parts of the stainless steel flanges. The magnetic flux leakage method and ultrasonic detection method are the two methods which are widely used at home and abroad for the corrosion detection of stainless steel flanges. The magnetic flux leakage method is based on the basic principle of the ferromagnetic materials' high permeability. The permeability of the stainless steel flange's corroded parts is much smaller than that of the stainless steel flange. If there is no defect in the stainless steel flange, most of the magnetic lines of flux will go through the flange and have the uniform distribution. If there are defects in the stainless steel flange, the magnetic lines of flux will become curves and some of the curves can be seen from the surface of the flange. The probe will firstly transmit the ultrasonic pulse to the inner wall of the stainless steel flange; the probe will receive the reflected pulse from the inner surface of the pipe wall; the probe will receive the reflected pulse from the outer surface of the pipe wall, and the distance between this pulse and the reflected pulse from the inner surface of the pipe wall reflects the wall thickness of the flange.
