The spot test
1. Nitric acid
A remarkable feature of the stainless steel flange is its corrosion resistance to concentrated nitric acid and dilute nitric acid. This property makes it easy to distinguish from most other metals or alloys.
2. Copper sulfate
This point test is the simplest method to quickly discriminate ordinary carbon steel from all types of stainless steel. The concentration of the used copper sulfate solution is between 5% and 10%.
Magnetic testing
Magnetic testing is the simplest method to tell annealed austenitic stainless steel from annealed ferritic stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic steel, but it will have slight magnetism after cold working at atmospheric pressure. Pure chromium steel and low alloy steel are strong magnetic steel.
The sulfuric acid test
The sulfuric acid test can differentiate 302 and 304 stainless steel from 316 and 317 stainless steel. The side cut of the sample should be finely ground, and then cleaned and passivated in sulfuric acid (It has a density of 1.42 g/ml) with a volume concentration between 20% and 30% and a temperature between 60℃ and 66℃ for half an hour.
